As possibly the only Belle & Sebastian fan here, I am very happy to let you know about singer Stuart Murdoch's latest project is God Help the Girl. All you hipster kids probably already know about this, but the majority of you guys probably haven't heard about this.

Anyway, this is actually a "musical film", written by Murdoch and will also feature some B&S songs as well as originals... And whether you were disappointed in their movie soundtrack efforts with Storytelling (well maybe I was the only one disappointed), the few songs I've heard sounds fantastic. Particularly some excerpts in the "Introduction" video and "Come Monday Night". The later song is an orchestral song that sounds like a 60s girl pop band. At least that's what I think of when I hear Catherine Ireton's vocals over the sweeping music.

I don't know when the film will come out, or if it's even shot, but the soundtrack looks solid. The release dates for the Come Monday Night single to be out on May 11^th (backed with the b-side, "Howard Jones Is My Mozart"), while the full album will be out on June 22^nd on Rough Trade Records*.

You should be excited. This is wonderful news, especially since people get the impression that B&S are broken up. If you discount the one "Are You Coming Over for Christmas" song, they haven't released new material since The Life Pursuit in 2006.

Reading about the new album, it also features vocals from Asya, Smoosh, Neil Hannon, Brittany Stallings, Dina Bankole, Celia Garcia, and Alex Klobouk.

So watch the video, listen to the song, and be happy.

Pelle Carlberg released The Lilac Time last Tuesday with US distributor Darla Records, although the album's been out in Europe since August. We caught up with Pelle in October to talk to him in his homeland of Sweden and he explained a lot of things, so be sure to listen to our interview! I will have to add that some people are hard to interview since sometimes they don't understand when doing radio interviews that they are the person that needs to talk and tell interesting stories - with Pelle that was not a problem at all. My fifteen minute limit for calling internationally went over in no time because Pelle was just so engaging.

For instance, he went on to explain "1983" as if someone who's never heard it but leaving out the punchline. Of course, since I have already loved the song, I can tell you that despite his to-do-away with the Belle & Sebastian comparison, that the song sounds incredibly like a B&S song...

I was surprised to find out that all his songs are based on true events, which leads me to wonder about his taxi ride in "Tired of Being PC" or his car problems on "Metal to Metal" or his hatred for a certain airline on "Fly Me to the Moon" (you get the impression Pelle travels quite a bit).

My favorite fun song on this album is "51, 3", which tells the story about Pelle taking a facebook quiz that tells him his mental age is 51. Just the opening line is well worth hearing.

Fans of Club 8 should take note of Karolina Komstedt's appearance on "Nicknames." He was apparently touring with Club 8 and had asked her to sing on the song with him. The song is quite upbeat and punchy, about reminiscing in their teenage years - going out to see old friends and drinking.

If you like indiepop and don't already own The Lilac Time, you can get it via Darla Records or Labrador. I will have to mention that I have bought things from Darla, and with the more obscure indie bands they may list it but it doesn't mean they have it in stock. This was very annoying when several packages I have ordered in the past end up missing one or two items. To be fair, they did not charge me for the missing items, but still, don't list CDs that you do not have in stock! I haven't ordered from them recently, so they might have changed the way they display what you can or cannot buy. Also, I'm sure with recent products, such as The Lilac Time, they should have them in stock - not to discourage you from ordering, of course.

Contrived imagery is the debut album of the british indie-rock band Plastic Passion and has been released for the japanese label Knew Noise Recordings in september. It came after a couple of split eps and “Out of sight/ out of mind”, an ep which can be downloaded on the label Filthy litte angels site (check here and go in the download section to find very interesting music!). Contrived imagery features the re-recording of some songs previously released (like the great “Not art” and “Pass over”, two of my favourite ones). The band takes his name from the homonym Cure’s song, and their style follows the choice the name suggests: Lemmi’s voice reminds Robert Smith and the sound is fast, with guitar and bass-line creating a punk-sound without too much distortions; someone calls this “art-punk” (but “this is not art but I don’t know what is” as they sing in “Not art”) . Their style is indebted with other bands of the early ‘80s: “We have come so far” has echoes in the voice like some Clash’s songs, “Beneath the light” sounds like a Police song. Looking for more recent influences I can say that the album will sound suitable for the people who likes Bloc Party (expecially Silent Alarm) and Art Brut. The album is homogenous in its purposes, but the songs are not similar one to the others, so you can hear “scratching at the door” which seems a ‘60s romantic ballad played with acoustic guitar and organo. I can’t understand why in “File under” the bass and the drums play contro-tempo, but this is just a little strange choice on a very interesting debut album. I hope that this will be pubblished also in Europe (but nowadays it’s not difficult to have it frome the japanese hmv store, and japanese courier companies work very fast!) so we can see them live.

Some days ago the Belle and Sebastian italian fansite wrote the news that a BBC sessions album will be released, and now you can also preorder it on recordstore: the new album after two years of silence is a compilation of songs played at the BBC studios in 1996 and 2001 and will be released on november 16th (although the date isn't yet official). The band hasn't clearly pubblished that news but in the Q&A section of their site they let the reader understand this release ("Q.What has happened to the tracks Shoot the sexual athlete,Magic of a kind word,Nothing in the silence,and My Girls got miracolous technique could you tell me please. A. They'll be out soon I think.

One thing I've noticed lately is a trend towards having indie music in TV ads and TV shows. It makes sense to me... From an indie artist's perspective, they have to support their art SOMEHOW, and at least doing ads and TV shows gets their music to a wider audience. From a TV/ad executive's perspective, it's probably a lot less expensive to get tracks from indie artists than from established ones. Personally I find it kind of cool to catch an iPod ad featuring a Feist song or something.

But I really LOVE it when a TV show makes a concerted effort to put together an awesome soundtrack comprised mainly of indie bands. It doesn't hurt if the show itself is as awesome as its soundtrack. This is why I'm stoked to tell you all about the newest show coming to BBC America. It's called SKINS and it's premiering here August 17 at 9pm/8c on BBC America. It's one of Britain's top TV shows, and follows a group of high school friends dealing with their crazy lives as best they can. It's not unlike My So Called Life or One Tree Hill, but the show addresses all of the issues that are important to teens in its own way. It's awesome because the plots aren't some fantasy created by adult writers based on what they think a teen's life MIGHT be like... The show's writing staff is mostly teens and young adults, so there's a sense of reality that makes you feel like these characters could be your friends, or even yourself.

Best of all, the show features some awesome indie music. The first season soundtrack has Gossip, Bloc Party, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Earlies, The Hives, and the most amazing cover of Wild World (done by one of the show's characters) ever. The theme song is by Fat Segal and there are even more awesome bands to be heard within the episodes themselves (Band of Horses, for example). Anyway, if you want to catch an amazing show and hear some amazing music at the same time, I definitely recommend you check out SKINS on Sunday, August 17th at 9pm/8c. I know you'll love it.

Dream Bitches are a folk-pop group from New York. They have a sophomore album, Coke-and-Spiriters coming out on May 20^th, and just by noticing their cover of Belle & Sebastian's "Me and the Major", I can already tell you that I will absolutely love this band.

Their version feels more like a singalong, with some great guitar playing. The original song is a gobful of fast-singing lyrics, so I'm glad to see that they manage to pull off the cover without mangling the lyrics. I mean, try saying "me and the major comes from different worlds, but if I get stuck in the lift its always with a toff", especially if you have no idea what a toff is.

B&S aside, this band is really between two BFF, Yoko Kikuchi and Ann Zakaluk. They started making music as Black Molly, and listening to Coke-and-Spiriters I get the impression that they have this really cute sense of humor. For instance, "Sweet Anneth" tells the story a girl who accidentally had 16 children, all the result of that she "sips cider through a straw". That probably didn't make sense to you, but that's the punchline.

Although, from my understanding, that this album has more of a fuller sound (with the addition of Casey Holford - the only boy, Julie DeLano - the bass, and Jen Knee - drums), and certainly songs like "Maniacal Mechanic" and "Hierarchy Island" really shows this off. However, surprisingly, I much more prefered the acoustic song, such as "Bronxy Marie" and "Spoke on a Wheel", that mostly centers around Yoko's vocals (hey, that rhymes).

The album ends with "Way to Go", a "serious" song, but with a Dream Bitches nerdiness, of course. Lyrics like "I'll be your Silver Surfer" and "We will hold hands/but only under the table/I will be your Soup of the Day" definitely deserves thumbs up from me.

By the way, there's also a hidden track, about Sammie Thompson, so be sure to stay after the credits roll.

Coke-and-Spiriters is out next Tuesday on RIYL Records, any fans of cute duo-singing and lyrically-obsessed fans should want this album in their collection.

Belle And Sebastian - Piazza, New York Catcher

Belle and Sebastian

I've been going to a few baseball games, can you believe how expensive beer is? I sometime think people don't really go out to watch the game, but to drink (before, during, and after the game!).

I've already used "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" (which includes Eddie Vedder singing "buy some peanuts and crack"), so I'm going to use Belle & Sebastian's "Piazza, New York Catcher" this time.

The song is not really about Mike Piazza, but more or less a love song. If you follow the lyrics, Stuart Murdoch, is reminiscencing about the time he shared his love of baseball and how they hung around the Giants' Candlestick Park in San Francisco. The lyrics are very colorful and descriptive.

The Left Banke - Walk Away Renee

Incidentally, towards the end of the song:

A lady stepping from the songs we love until this day
You'd settle for an epitaph like "Walk Away, Renee"

This is a reference to the Left Banke's hit song "Walk Away Renee".

Anyroad, I've seen B&S twice now, and a year apart, and everytime Murdoch sings this song, he consistently cannot remember the lyrics. He even pulls out the written lyrics, but still manages to mix up his lyrics. I suppose, it's part of the charm of live performances.

Clever Girls Like Clever Boys Much More Than Clever Boys Like Clever Girls

Searching the blogs for a fix of Belle & Sebastian, I found reference to Pelle Carlberg. I instantly put my musical stalking skills to good use and started to hunt him down to see if he could provide me with a much desired alternative to B&S.

Will I be injecting him into my veins any time soon? Hell ya. His songs are like the vegan chocolate body paint I have been seeking for some time.

To a large extent I agree with comparisons to early B&S. However I’d say that his high class approach towards his music is very similar to that of The Divine Comedy. Both groups are known for the witty lyrics and Pelle is definitely a source of dry humour and great word play.

Once again, my drunken stumbling around the internet mean I cannot declare myself to be a Pelle Carlberg expert but nor could I ever claim to have a finely honed palate for red wine. The result is the same. I knows what I likes.

Born in Uppsala, Sweden, Pelle claims to have been playing in bands since the Middle Ages. He is a multi-talented performer who plays the majority of instruments on his new stuff.

He has release four recordings all available at labrador. It is quite rare that I rush out to purchase a whole discography but I couldn’t resist in this case.

Having recently completed a mini tour, I cannot guarantee when he’ll be back on the road but I hope there are plans for, at least, one performance in the UK.
